Martha Scharnitzky Obituary

Martha Remington Scharnitzky died Tuesday, March 19, 2024 in Summerville, SC. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Martha was the daughter of Dr. John Wood Remington and Emily Henderson Remington.

She attended Richmond Academy and Augusta College, where she earned a Certificate for Elementary Education. She also attended Salem College and the University of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor degree in Philosophy. Martha also received a BS in Accounting from Florida Southern University.

One of her many highlights in life was her love of music. She sang in many choirs, the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Augusta GA, the Augusta College Choir, Grace Episcopal Church, now Cathedral, in Charleston, and during her year abroad in high school, she was a member of the Munich Bach Choir under Karl Richter.

She married William Arnold Scharnitzky, Jr. in 1968. Together, they formed the Scharnitzky CPA firm in North Charleston. They worked closely together for 35 years. She was also an enrolled Agent in the firm. She was treasurer of the Deutscher Bruderlische Bund, where she also was the first woman to be a member of this organization.

Martha's husband Arnold Scharnitzky preceded her in death in 2019. She is survived by her two sons, Willam Arnold Scharnitzky III (Jennifer) and grandchildren, Emily, Matthew and Andrew; son, John Frederick Scharnitzky and grandchildren Abigail, Samuel (Kelsea) and a great-grandchild, Haven. She is also survived by her sister, Porter Remington of Summerville; sisters-in-law, JoHanna Singletary and Mae Gilme of Augusta, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their great appreciation to the Presbyterian community of the Village at Summerville and to Bayata Hospice for all of their kindness, support, and care.

A service of the Witness to the Resurrection will be held SATURDAY morning, March 23, 2024 at 10:00 am in the chapel at the Village of Summerville, Summerville, SC.
