Johannus Bernardus (Benno) Van Ryswyk left this earth for a better place on July 7, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by family at the age of 78.
He was born in 1938 in The Netherlands as the youngest of 5 boys. He came to the U.S. in 1958 and was quickly drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in France and the U.S. He worked for both Shell Oil Company (East and West Coast) and Hill City Oil in Vicksburg MS (where he resided for 23 years).
Upon retirement, he and Truus moved to Charleston, SC to be closer to family. Benno was a loving husband, father and grandfather. One of his favorite things was to spend time with his family. He was also an avid reader and loved to watch his nature shows. He had a great compassion for those less fortunate and gave generously to those in need. He did not know a stranger and often engaged people in conversation where ever he could. His family will miss his sense of humor, his kindness and his love dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Truus, his three children Helen Wainwright (Greg), Martin Van Ryswyk (Amy), Amy Litz (Aaron) and five grandchildren Brandon, Brooke, Lily, Jonah and Abby. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Village at Summerville Presbyterian Community who provided supportive care for Benno and his family.
A memorial service will be held on July 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m at Parks Funeral Home in Summerville, SC with the family receiving guests at their home to follow.

Celebrating the life of Johannus B. Van Ryswyk
Thank you for signing Johannus B. Van Ryswyk's Guestbook
My condolences to the family during this time of bereavement. I pray God comforts the family during this difficult time. May the many cherished memories of Benno comfort his family and friends. A comforting thought to keep in mind is at Psalm 46:1 "God is our refuge and strength. A help that is readily found in times of distress." The family is in my prayers.

Truus and Benno, new, wonderful additions to Legend Oaks 4 years ago, became part of our lives and hearts very quickly.
John had especially mentioned his chatting with Benno and how enjoyable, smart and fun, he was, Truus, our small book club founder, a treasure. Our hearts go out to her and the family, with this tremendous loss of Benno. Our love, Ginny & John Anderson

In Vicksburg, we lived in the same subdivision and had the distinct pleasure of becoming good friends with Benno, Truus and Tootsie. We always enjoyed Benno’s wit, sense of humor and laughter. He will certainly be missed. Rest in Peace Benno.

We are very saddened to say goodbye to Benno. He was a smart, kind, interesting gentleman with a funny sense of humor. As he struggled with his illness, we saw his sweet nature that makes it a pleasure to help a person through times like his. We were blessed to call him our friend.
